Fun Game

I found a fun game online that will reinforce our vowel sounds. This week we have been working on short "i." http://pbskids.org/lions/games/stacker.html

Remember on these hot days, it is a good idea to send the kids with a water bottle to keep in their backpack. Although we have a drinking fountain in the classroom, for sanitary reasons we do not use.

Busy day

We had a really busy day today. This morning we created flip books with our words ending in "ig." Mrs. McEvoy from Calabasas High came by to pick up our questionnaires for our high school pen pals. We read Sasha's birthday book. Today was our first music time and it was really fun! Tomorrow is library day and homework is due.

Maya said, "I liked when we did the flip book."

Nicole said, "I like reading Growing Vegetable Soup."

Sydney said, "I like when we had music."

Aviv said, "I liked when we did math."

Royce said, "I like when I went up to return library books with Nicole."

Sight words

Hi All,

Happy Saturday! I was going through the homework packets and noticed that some kids had returned the sight word sheets. These should be used at home to practice these high frequency words. Cut out the sight words and practice reading these words until they are memorized. One way to keep the words in one place is to punch a hole in the upper corner and place on a ring.

Being able to read high frequency sight words from memory is one way we become good readers. High frequency sight words may be words that do not follow the rules of the English language or they may be words that we encounter a lot in our reading. Either way, by the end of the school year, your first grader should be able to read the 200 first grade high frequency sight words out of context (meaning from a list, not in a story).

Below is a list of the sight words from Theme One in our literature unit:

go, on, the, and, here, jump, not, too, we, a, find, have, one, to, who

Check your students backpacks for their library books. To check out a book next Friday, their library books need to be returned. They may return their book any day next week. Wow, what happened to Tuesday?

Our day flew by in Room 125. We watched a few minutes of the President's speech. One of the things the President said was "Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide." We wrote in our journals about "I am good at..." We read in our book I am Six. We also had PE this afternoon.

*Please remind your child to bring their folder to school every day. Tomorrow we will be sending home information about Back to School Night (Thursday night) and picture day, (Friday.) Also please remember that Back to School Night is just for parents.

Thanks!
