Guest post from Mrs. McEvoy - Thougths on the season

I love this time of year for many reasons.  Being with family and friends to celebrate the holidays makes me extremely happy.  I love to decorate our house and my favorite decorations are the houses and buildings in the village that I set up on our hearth.  I hope your holidays are filled with joy, peace, and love.

What do you love about the winter holidays?

Thanksgiving traditions

At this time of year, people look forward to certain family traditions. A tradition is “the process of handing down a belief or custom from one generation to the next.”

Today in class we were talking about our Thanksgiving Traditions.  Some people go to their grandma's house and eat turkey dinner with their family.  Some friends in class eat special food from the countries their family came from.  In my family, Mr. Levy (who is a wonderful cook) prepares the big feast.  Then we all sit down at the table together to eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and salad.

What is your Thanksgiving tradition?

What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

Friendship

Last week we started writing to our 9th grade pen pals at Calabasas High School.  This week we received our first pen pal letter back.  In first grade we talk a lot about what makes a good friend. For me a friend is someone you can have fun with, someone who listens to you and someone who helps you.  I feel super lucky that I get to work with my good friend Mrs. McEvoy every week.
What do you think makes a good friend?
What do you like to do with your friends?

Read to Self

For the past few days we have been working hard on reading to ourselves from our book boxes.  In "read to self" we have certain behaviors that allow us to become better readers and increase our stamina.  Today we made it to 6 minutes of stamina.

Below are some pictures of today's "read to self" and sentences explaining our "read to self" rules.

"Logan is reading quietly," grinned David.

"Matthew and Ariana are reading in their heads," noted Nolan.

"Olivia, Harper, Valeria are reading the whole time," exclaimed Ryan.

"Baxter is reading because it's fun," related Jaslene.

"We are reading to become better readers," roared Leslie.

What were you reading during today's "read to self" time?

Valeria said, "I played on the playground with Taylor and Ella."

"I put books in my book box," explained Grant.

"I liked drawing my picture, it was really fun too."  said Baxter.

First day of school!

Our first day of first grade was fantastic!

We started the morning, by meeting on the upper yard.  We saw some old friends and met new ones.

We listened to our principal, Mrs. Brazell.

Then we walked down to our new classroom, where we got to work.
We decorated leaves for our classroom library tree.

We read the  book Chrysanthemum and graphed the number of letters in our names.

After recess we took a tour of our school.

Right before we left we played with magic playdoh.  If our white playdoh changed colors we new it would be a magical year.
What a fun day!
What was your favorite part of today?
