What do you think?

Next Saturday Mrs. Levy and Mrs. McEvoy will be swimming from Alcatraz in the 8th Annual Swim with the Centurions.

How long do you think it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy to do the swim?

What is the distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco?

Do you know any facts about Alcatraz?

Do you think the ocean temperature is warmer or colder in the San Francisco Bay?

  1. Mrs. Levy will smoke Mrs. McEvoy and be out of the very cold water long before Mrs. McEvoy exits the bay!

  2. I think it will take over two hours for Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy to finish the swim. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is around 1.25 miles. All I know about Alcatraz is that it was a prison off the coast of the San Francisco Bay. It hasn't been used as a prison for a very long time. I think that the ocean temperature in the San Francisco Bay is MUCH colder than the ocean temperature here.

  3. Dear Mrs. McEvoy and Waverly,

Thank you for the comments! I think that it will be an amazing swim and predict we will both finish in under an hour.

I am so excited that one of our penpals from Mrs. McEvoy's class commented on the blog. Waverly look out for something special for that distinction.

As for the water temperature, would you believe it is about the same as it is here, 59 degrees. Brrrr!!!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Levy

  4. I believe the swim will take a little under three hours for Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy to finish. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is 1.25 miles. Alcatraz Island was so barren during 1854, that a 23, 000 gallon water tank was built on the island. Fertile soil was also taken from Angel Island to grow plant life on the barren land. I believe both water temperatures are equally FREEZING! So good luck to you both and have fun swimming :)

  5. I think it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy about an hour and fifteen minutes to complete the swim. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco (Bay Street) is about 1.5 miles. I know that Alcatraz was used as a prison off the coast of San Francisco. Usually people had to commit very bad crimes to get put in Alcatraz, as it was a prison with stricter rules, harsher punishments, and worse conditions than regular prisons. I think the ocean temperature in the San Francisco Bay is a little bit colder than the water here in Malibu.

  6. I think it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy about 50 minutes to swim from Alcatraz. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is 1.4 miles. I know that Alcatraz can also be called The Rock, families lived on Alcatraz when it was an active prison, Native Americans lived there after the prison was closed, during the Civil War, confederate soldiers were imprisoned there, and it is possible to escape Alcatraz just like Frank Morris and his brothers did because scientists attempted it and succeeded. I think the ocean temperature is colder in the San Francisco bay.

  7. I think that it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy between 45 minutes to an hour to complete their swim. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is about 1.4 miles. Alcatraz used to be a prison, mainly for convicts that committed serious felonies. In fact, it is one of the world's most famous (or infamous) prisons. Now, it has turned into a tourist attraction. Many people come to Alcatraz to see the former prison. I think that the water is colder in the San Francisco Bay than it is here.

  8. I think that it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete their swim from Alcatraz. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is about 1.4 miles. Alcatraz was a military prison that many violent criminals were held. Alcatraz is also know as "The Rock". Alcatraz was purposely built isolated from the city of San Francisco because it was harder for criminals to escape due to the very cold water temperatures. I think that the water temperature is colder in the San Francisco Bay.

  9. I think it will take Mrs.McEvoy and Mrs.Levy 45-50 minutes to swim the 1.5 mile distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco.Alcatraz was one of the worst prison sites and was considered being inescapable. It was also used as a lighthouse and military fortification. A few famous inmates include Robert Stroud, Al Capone, and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. The water in the San Francisco Bay will be extremely cold. Good Luck!!

  10. I believe it will take Mrs.McEvoy and Mrs.Levy about 1 hour and a quarter to finish their Alcatraz swim. The distance to Alcatraz from San Francisco is approximately 1.4 miles. I know that Alcatraz was a high security prison where the worst of the worst criminals were held. It was specifically built on an island because it would be too hard for prisoners to escspe. Eventually Alcatraz was shut down because of the lack of money. I think that the water will be colder than in the San Fransisco Bay.

  11. I believe that it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy 70 minutes to finish the Alcatraz-San Francisco swim. The distance between the two locations is about a mile and a half, which I'm sure both teachers can conquer. Alcatraz, as I know it, was a government prison in which many offenders, such as terrorists, high-level criminals, and murderers were kept, guarded by military officials. It was built on an island because there was nearly no escape; besides swimming, of course. It was shut down because of a lack of government funding. The water, however, might be colder in the San Francisco Bay, but the ocean is the ocean, and it is cold throughout. Good luck to both teachers! :) -Greg R. | P.4

  12. I think Mrs.McEvoy and Mrs.Levy will finish the swim in just over an hour. The distance between Alcatraz and San Francisco is about 1.4 miles. Alcatraz is an island that was used as a military base and later a prison. It is infamous for having been nearly impossible to escape. There have been 14 recorded escape attempts, and while none have been confirmed to be successful, there are rumors that some were. I would guess that the water is quite a bit colder there than it is at home.

  13. I think that it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy and hour and five minutes to complete the swim. It is about 1.4 miles from Alcatraz to San Francisco. Alcatraz was meant to hold prisoners that were easily able to survive and cope with other prisons. Alcatraz Island has no source of fresh water. Even the strongest of prisoners could not survive the inescapable and cold Alcatraz prison. I think that the ocean temperature is slightly warmer than in the San Francisco Bay.

  14. I am guessing it will take Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy about an hour and 15 minutes to swim Alcatraz. The distance between Alcatraz and San Francisco is approximately 1.5 miles. Alcatraz is infamous for being an inescapable fortress. Or so the people who guarded the prison believed. There were 14 separate escape attempts in which 36 men (2 of which tried to escape twice). The island was made a prison in 1933 and closed to in 1963 by JFK. The fortress was shut down due to heavy costs, erosion in the buildings, and the bay was getting polluted by the sewage leaving the prison. I think (but assume I am absolutely positive)that the water is far colder than here at home. The water is freezing and if you were to stay in long enough, you would contract hypothermia.

  15. I think it will take Mrs.McEvoy and Mrs.Levy about an hour and half to complete the swim. The distance between Alcatraz and San Francisco is about 1.3 miles. I think the water temperature is very cold! Alcatraz Island was a prisoner camp for some of the most treacherous convicts in the late 1700's. Although it is not a jail nowadays, thousands of people visit this historical place every single day.
    Good luck Mrs.McEvoy and Mrs.Levy!!!

  16. I think Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy will finish the swim in about an hour. The distance is about 1.4 miles. I know that Alcatraz was an old prison and it was meant for criminals who committed serious crimes. It is purposely a prison so that you could not escape, and if you tried to swim, it would be too cold. I think it is colder than San Fransisco, but I know that you guys can do it! Good luck! I can't wait to hear all about it!

  17. I think it will take 1.5 hours for Mrs. Levy and Mrs. Mcevoy to complete the swim from Alcatraz back to San Francisco. The distance of this swim will be approximately 1.4 miles. Some facts about Alcatraz are that it is now a part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area, it is known as "The Rock," and local prisoners were held there during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. I think the water in the San Francisco Bay is going to be a lot colder than the water in Southern California.

  18. I think it will take Mrs. Mcevoy and Mrs. Levy one hour to complete the race. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is 1.4 miles. I know that Alcatraz is an island that was used as a prison. It was put on this island to make it difficult for prisoners to escape. I think that the water is colder in San Francisco because the weather is colder there. As a swimmer i know that will be tough. Good luck!

-The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is around 1.25 miles
-I don't know to much about Alcatraz but what i do know is that it was a prison off the San Francisco Bay, the reason it was put here was because it would be to difficult for prisoners to escape.
-COLDER! I just went to San Francisco and the water was FREEZING a lot colder then here. :/

    GOODLUCK!

I do know that it used to be a prison, but is now more of a tourist attraction. Even though both are very cold, i think the water in the San Francisco Bay might be a little cooler.

    GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!

I think it will take both teachers about two and a half hours to swim form Alcatraz to san fran bay. The distance is about 1.4 miles. I only know that Alcatraz is no longer a prison, but back in the day people escaped and swam to freedom. The water in San Francisco is colder becuase it is a mixture of fresh and salt water

  25. Wow, thanks Mrs. McEvoy's class for such a great response.

Our swim took all of us under an hour. The conditions were perfect and the water temperature was about 58 degrees. (Check out the pictures that I posted on the blog.)

Please keep up the commenting. It is a wonderful way for us to get to know you!

    Your pal,
    Mrs. Levy

  27. I think it will take Mrs.McEvoy and Mrs.Levy a little under an hour to finish the race. The distance from Alcatraz to San Francisco is 1.25 miles. I know Alcatraz was a prison that held some of the worlds worst prisoners and that it was thought to be impossible to escape from Alcatraz until November 28, 1918 when four prisoners escaped and made it to Sutro Forest. I believe the ocean temperature will be colder in the bay because the water that flows into the bay comes from the northwest and that usually brings in colder water than from the south.

  28. I think it will take under an hour for Mrs. McEvoy and Mrs. Levy to complete the marathon from Alcatraz to San Francisco. The distance between these two locations are about 1.2 to 1.3 miles. I am not familiar with Alcatraz except for the fact that it used to be a major prison many years ago. I believe the bay temperature will be colder than the ocean temperature.
